TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto congratulated businessman Donald Trump on his victory in the 2024 United States presidential election. Prabowo said Indonesia and the United States are strategic partners with strong and diverse relations.

The strategic partnership between Indonesia and the U.S., Prabowo said, has great potential for mutual benefit. “I hope to work closely with you and your government to further enhance this partnership for global peace and stability,” the head of state said in a statement on X @prabowo’s account on Thursday, November 7, 2024.

Trump was elected as president, defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. He will return to the White House after his first presidency ended in 2020.

The Republican Party elite secured more than the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the presidency, according to Edison Research projections. During the campaign, Trump was associated with dark rhetoric that deepened polarization in the country.

Winning in the state of Wisconsin pushed the former president past the threshold. As of 5:45 AM ET or 5:45 PM WIB (Western Indonesia Time), on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, Trump had won 279 electoral votes compared to Harris’ 223 votes.

Some states are yet to be counted. Trump also led Harris by around 5 million votes in the popular vote count.

“America has given us a mandate like never before, and strong,” Trump told supporters cheering at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in Florida on Wednesday morning.

Trump’s victory was also welcomed by other world leaders such as Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. The Israeli Prime Minister called Trump’s election in the US presidential election a ‘Historic Victory’.

Prabowo will visit the United States as part of a two-week working visit starting November 9, 2024. Presidential Communication Office Head Hasan Nasbi said that the former Commander of the Strategic Reserve Command of the Army has the opportunity to meet with any elected president of the United States. Meanwhile, Prabowo is already scheduled to meet with President Joe Biden.

“It might later develop to, you know, after Mr. President is there, maybe there are already preliminary results, even though it’s not the inauguration yet, but maybe he can also meet with the election winner there, whoever wins it,” Hasan said at the Jakarta Presidential Palace complex on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
