TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center or PPATK discussed online gambling in a hearing with the House Commission III of the Indonesian Parliament at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.

During the session, PPATK head Ivan Yustiavandana revealed the turnover, transactions, regions and age of online gamblers in Indonesia.

Online gambling turnover

Ivan stated that the online gambling turnover in the second semester of 2024 had reached Rp283 trillion.

“So if we look at the development of online gambling, it is currently showing an upward trend compared to the previous period,” said Ivan.

He mentioned that in the first semester of 2024, the amount of turnover from online gambling reached Rp174 trillion. This figure increased again in the second semester of 2024, reaching Rp283 trillion.

Increase in the number of transactions

Ivan also revealed an increase in the number of transactions. He stated that the number of online gambling transactions tended to increase by 237.48 percent compared to last year.

According to him, this happened because online gambling agents now carry out transactions with small amounts.

“In the past, an agent’s account could have a large amount, but now they (agents) break it down into smaller amounts,” he said.

This modus operandi is supported by the habit of Indonesians exposed to online gambling. Ivan said that online gamblers in the country now only transact in small amounts.

“In the past, people used to transact large amounts for online gambling, but now it can be as little as Rp10,000. This is what makes the transactions massive,” he said.

He also noted that online gamblers in Indonesia spend almost 70 percent of their income on online gambling.

“In the past, if someone received Rp1 million, they would only use Rp100,000 to Rp200,000 for online gambling, but now it has reached Rp900,000,” he said.
