TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Jakarta Provincial Government will simultaneously turn off the lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, November 9, 2024. Asep Kuswanto, head of the Jakarta Provincial Environment Agency, said the blackout in Jakarta is being conducted to raise public awareness about the importance of energy saving and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

“Through this action, we hope that the public can be more aware of the importance of energy saving and reduction of GHG emissions,” Asep said in a written statement on Saturday, November 9, 2024.

Asep explained that the activity is in line with the Jakarta Governor’s Instruction Number 14 of 2021, which mandates blackouts four times a year to raise awareness of energy saving and carbon emission reduction. This blackout is also part of the activities of the Love Flowers and National Fauna Year 2024.

Through this action, Asep hopes to reduce electricity consumption and carbon emissions, resulting in a positive impact on the environment. “By taking these simple actions, we can help preserve the environment and reduce the impact of climate change,” said Asep.

The blackout locations include three clusters: local government buildings, Jakarta city symbols, and main roads and arteries. Asep revealed that several private buildings, commercial buildings, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, and apartments have committed to participate in the blackout.
