TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Jakarta Environmental Agency of Jakarta announced a deliberate power outage or blackout on Saturday, November 9, 2024, to save budget and reduce carbon emissions. The Head of Jakarta Environmental Agency, Asep Kuswanto, stated that the reduced carbon emissions exceeded 60 million tons.
The data is based on the PLN Jakarta Raya Distribution 2024. “The reduction in carbon emissions (CO2) is 66.49 tons (83 MWh x 0.8 kg CO2/KWh),” said Asep in his written statement on Sunday, November 10, 2024.
The purpose of this blackout is to increase public awareness of the importance of saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This activity is in line with the Governor of Jakarta Instruction Number 14 of 2021, which mandates the blackout to promote energy saving and carbon emissions reduction three times a year.

Furthermore, according to Asep, this blackout also saves on electricity financing, with a calculation of 83 MWh for 1 hour from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM WIB. “Economic savings amount to Rp 120,263,708 (83 MWh x Rp1,447.00/KWh),” he said.
The areas instructed to participate in the blackout yesterday were throughout the buildings or offices of the Jakarta Provincial Government (except hospitals, community health centers, clinics, and others), protocol and arterial roads, symbols or landmarks of Jakarta such as City Hall, Monas, Arjuna Wiwaha Horse Statue, Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, hero statues, General Sudirman Statue, and several protocol and arterial roads and buildings in five administrative cities.
