TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Maratua Island, a pristine gem nestled within the Derawan Islands cluster in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan, is poised to be transformed into a premium tourist destination. Renowned for its breathtaking beaches and captivating underwater vistas, this island holds immense potential for high-end tourism development.
Acting East Kalimantan Governor Akmal Malik has expressed the government’s intention to elevate Maratua Island’s tourism offerings beyond mass tourism.
“We aim to establish a classification system that caters to both mass tourism and specific, high-end experiences,” Akmal said in a press release on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
The island has a diverse marine ecosystem, teeming with a myriad of fish species, turtles, and vibrant coral reefs. The island’s mangrove forests and coconut groves further enhance its natural beauty.
The island is also well-equipped with a variety of resorts and cottages, such as Maratua Paradise Resort, Pratasaba in Payung-Payung, Green Nirvana Jalan Bayur, Payung-Payung, Borneo Cottage Teluk Harapan, Noah Maratua Resort, Teluk Harapan Bohe Bukut, and Virgin Cocoa Island.
Premium Destination
Despite its popularity, Akmal believes that Maratua Island’s tourism potential can be further maximized to increase its value. He highlighted the suitability of islands like Maratua and Kakaban for development as premium destinations.
“We have learned from experience that mass tourism can have a significant environmental impact,” he added.
Akmal cited the example of Kakaban Island, where tourism activities were temporarily suspended to allow the disrupted lake ecosystem to recover. The mysterious disappearance of jellyfish from the lake, which has recently been resolved, underscores the delicate balance of nature and the need for responsible tourism practices.
The East Kalimantan government is actively promoting tourist destinations such as Sangalaki, Kakaban, and Derawan to both domestic and international visitors. Initiatives like the Maratua Jazz Festival contribute to the region’s growing tourism appeal.
