TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Head of the Presidential Communications Office Hasan Nasbi said there is a possibility of a meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump during his visit to the United States. Prabowo is scheduled to meet President Joe Biden in his upcoming visit.
“Mr. President (Prabowo) initially plans to meet incumbent president (Joe Biden), despite the tail-end of his term. But it’s also possible for him to meet the winner or the recent election, in this case Donald Trump,” said Hasan on Thursday, November 7, 2024.
Prabowo will visit the United States as part of a two-week tour starting November 8, 2024. Prabowo will first visit China, then depart to the United States. After, the head of state will visit Peru for the APEC Summit and Brazil for the G20 Summit. He will also embark on a working visit to London, UK.
Trump was elected president by defeating Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris. He will return to the White House after his first term ended in 2020.
The Republican Party elite secured more than 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the presidency, according to Edison Research’s projections. Trump is associated with polarizing rhetoric during his campaign period, which further divides the country.
Through social media X, Prabowo maintained that Indonesia and the United States are strategic partners with strong and diverse relations. The strategic partnership between Indonesia and the U.S., Prabowo said, has great potential for mutual benefit.
“I hope to work closely with you and your government to further enhance this partnership for global peace and stability,” Prabowo posted on X on Thursday.
Trump’s victory was also welcomed by other world leaders, such as Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. The Israeli Prime Minister called Trump’s election in the U.S. presidential election a ‘Historic Victory’.
